Shahid Afridi named Galle Gladiators captain, Kamran Akmal withdraws ahead of LPL

Afridi was on Saturday named captain of the Galle Gladiators team, which has been brought by Pakistani businessman, Nadeem Omar who also owns the popular Quetta Gladiators franchise in the Pakistan Super League.

Afridi was given the responsibility as wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was initially set to lead the side, was ruled out of the event after being named in Pakistan’s squad for New Zealand tour.

Senior Pakistan wicketkeeper batsman, Kamran Akmal has withdrawn from the Lanka Premier League (LPL), which begins in Hambantota on November 26. After examining the MRI reports on Friday, doctors advised Kamran Akmal to have three weeks of rest to prevent a “neck spasm” from aggravation.

Akmal was earlier scheduled to leave for Sri Lanka on Friday. Akmal also missed the Pakistan Super League eliminator on November 14 in Karachi due to stiffness in his neck.
His side Peshawar Zalmi lost that must-win encounter to Lahore Qalandars by five wickets. The experienced wicketkeeper batsman was to represent Dambulla Hawks in the LPL.
